Influence of the electronic structure of carbon (diamond-like) thin films on tribological characteristics

This study takes a new look at carbon-based ion-plasma coatings (DLC) deposited on steel substrate from acetylene and methylsiloxane gas mixture. The most remarkable result to emerge X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is surface-to-substrate decrease in the "diamond" electron configuration of carbon sp3. A set tribological tests showed noticeable coefficient friction. Surprisingly, there was no increase wear resistance when using DLC contact surfaces nitrided nitralloy loaded friction unit.
